An elegant, Scandi-inspired website for mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby | Bath web designer
Web design for the world's best singers!
We're absolutely delighted to have completed a website for mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby. Catherine is one of the UK's leading mezzos, regularly performing in the world's top opera houses, including London's Royal Opera House and the Sydney Opera House. It's been a real pleasure to work with another incredible singer and to provide them with a beautiful and visible showcase for their work.
Catherine's site can be viewed here.
Design brief & Scandi simplicity
Catherine came to us with a clear brief for how the finished site should look: she was inspired by the muted colour palette and elegant lines of Scandinavian design. Some of the key features of that 'Scandi' look start with getting rid of all kinds of clutter! Next, we're looking for a neutral colour palette, and avoiding anything too dark or chunky. Finally, we're going for organisational principles that present information in blocks with movement.
Catherine wanted a site to showcase her considerable body of stage and recorded work, the audience for which is those who work in the classical music profession, and anyone else interested in opera.
The colour palette was kept almost completely neutral, with a monochrome palette closely aligned to the Scandi design brief.
The logo we created for Catherine is super-simple: we focused on a monochrome theme with elements of symmetry and a contemporary, lowercase sans-serif typeface. The logo draws attention to the brand without drawing attention to itself.
We built Catherine a fully customised site using Squarespace, together with a large amount of custom CSS and gorgeous studio and performance photography. We used an innovative grid design to showcase Catherine's reviews from the world's leading press outlets, various snippets of CSS code to create small zoom animations and dynamism.
The site is complete with embedded HD video streaming and an audio player presenting a range of Catherine's commercial operatic work.
We have worked with some amazing web design clients over the past two years, especially performers and creative arts professionals - please get in touch with us if you think we can help you. We'd love to hear from you.
